Library offers career guides
January 22, 1991
If you are a student with questions or doubts about your career after college, the Founders Memorial Library has numerous resources to help you in your search for information.
Byron Anderson, the library’s computer reference coordinator, specializes in career reference. Anderson produced a guide entitled “Sources: Career Information” that is available at the general reference desk on the first floor of the library.
Anderson also speaks to classes if enough students make a request and the professor grants permission, Reference Librarian Ken Potts said.
The library’s reference section is located on the first floor, to the left after entering.
The reference section contains a large volume of books on career planning. The books are a good place to start if a student is just starting his search, Potts said. He recommended the Occupational Outlook Handbook, published by the government.
The library is also equipped with three computer systems to aid students in their career planning search. One system is the Online Catalog, which helps locate books within the library. There are six Online terminals on the main floor and one on each of the other floors.
The Infotrac system is used to help find magazine articles by subject. According to Anderson’s guide, subject headings like “occupations” and “professions” might be used. There are three stations located on the main floor.
The CD-ROM terminals are used for more advanced research, Potts said. There are four terminals on the main floor and one on each of the other floors.
The computers are fairly easy to use and take about 10 minutes to master, Potts said. There are always people around to answer any questions, he added.
The library also possesses books on how to write a resume, where to find internships, and directories of state and local jobs.
Pamphlets on various aspects of career planning and job placement can be found in the Career File next to the card catalogue.
For more advanced students, there is information on specific companies on the second floor, Potts said.
Potts also recommended students try the DeKalb Public Library located at 309 Oak.
