Clerks brush up on election laws

Students aren’t the only ones who must learn. County clerks must, also.

DeKalb County Clerk Sharon Holmes and two members of her staff, Jane Albrecht and Nancy Marchiando, spent Jan. 9 and 10 in Dixon, Ill., at a seminar on election procedures.

“It was a very intense course,” Holmes said.

The State Board of Elections and election authorities conducted the seminar to review election administration procedures and current policies in Illinois.

The course covered such topics as nominating petitions, ballot preparation, campaign financing, voter registration, ballot testing and absentee voting.

“The response to these seminars has been excellent,” said Board Chairman John Lanigan. Forty people attended the seminar.

“Throughout the entire process—planning, scheduling and especially the meetings themselves—everyone has been enthusiastic and supportive,” he added.

No major changes were made in election procedures, Holmes said. “It was just a refresher course,” she said.

The workshop is put on about every two to three years, Holmes said. This year, it will be in four different cities around the state, she added.
