With their powerful voices, saving Honmoon from demonic powers – “KPop Demon Hunters” are taking the world by storm.
The new animated musical was released by Sony Pictures on June 20.
Warning: Spoilers Ahead!
To set the scene, a century ago, demons began invading the human world to feed on human souls. A trio of female Korean Shaman came forward to protect the world from demons. Combining their power of music to unite souls, they created the first Honmoon to protect the human kind from devils.
Honmoon is a magical protective layer preventing demons from entering the human world. This layer is created when the songs of trio hunters move the hearts of many people.
In present time, a kpop girl group called HUNTR/X is the new trio demon hunters tasked with protecting the Honmoon from evil demons. One of the members is Rumi, the daughter of former demon hunter Mi-yeong Ryu.
The HUNTR/X members were selected by Celine, another former demon hunter. She is a mentor for the girls who don’t know what their role is at the moment.
A highlight from the movie’s soundtrack is “Takedown,” sang by TWICE’s Jihyo, Jeongyeon and Chaeyoung. The three girls showed their powerful vocals throughout the song.
Korean actor Ahn Hyo-seop did voice over for Jinu, the secondary antagonist in the KPop Demon Hunters movie, and the leader of the band Saja Boys.
The Saja Boys are a rival K-pop group of five demons disguised as humans secretly serving as a front for the demons. As the movie was Hyo-seop’s first voiceover experience, he shined in expressing the character’s voice and emotions.
While HUNTR/X works to save the Honmoon, Rumi is keeping something important from the other group members, Zoey and Mira.
The plot starts to flow when Rumi meets Jinu and he finds out her secret mark on her body. From here the conflict between HUNTR/X and the Saja Boys begins to unfold.
The movie continues as Rumi and Jinu struggle to rid themselves of the marks that cover their bodies but fail.
One of them being born between a human and demon, and the other is haunted by a deal with a demon causing him to lose his memories.
When it reaches the end, Rumi tries to save her bandmates Zoey and Mira with her voice as they were controlled by the demonic power. All while the trio tries to save humankind from the demon king Gwi-ma.
With her beautiful and powerful voice, Rumi fights Gwi-ma one-on-one using the power of her voice and magic. Unexpectedly Jinu helps her to fight the demon while betraying his own kind — a choice that ultimately cost Jinu his life.
The movie ended with Jinu dying and the trio successfully saving the Honmoon. This end was not the ending we wanted. As a fan of this movie, we wished for a happy ending with Rumi and Jinu reuniting with each other and getting rid of their mark to begin a happier life.
The movie left a deep impression on the fans who are left anticipating for a sequel movie to be made.
I would rate this movie a 9/10 because the ending was not what I wanted. Hopefully with the new sequel movie, the story will unfold in a more satisfying way.
