As NIU celebrates its 118th Homecoming, DeKalb’s business community is stepping up to show Huskie pride in a big way. More than 30 local businesses have signed on as official Homecoming hosts, offering exclusive discounts, special experiences and more to current students, alumni, faculty and fans.
All week long, students wearing NIU gear or showing a valid OneCard can take advantage of deals throughout downtown DeKalb and surrounding areas, creating a festive, community-wide celebration extending beyond campus.
“Our demographic is college kids. That’s what we’re here for,” Rebekah Larsen said, bakery operations manager at Insomnia Cookies. “So any opportunity we get to involve ourselves in the local college is great. I really like the sense of community that the college brings.”
Insomnia Cookies, located at 203 E. Lincoln Highway, is sweetening Homecoming by offering a free classic cookie with purchase to customers who show up in Huskie garb.
For large groups seeking a sit down meal, El Jimador Mexican Grill, located at 206 E. Lincoln Highway, features an upstairs banquet room that can host up to 90 guests, making it a popular spot for alumni dinners or large student parties. Groups over 35 guests can receive a $200 discount on room fees.
Build Lasting Memories
Balloon Bar, at 145 E Lincoln Hwy, is a local business specializing in balloons for various celebrations.
“For Homecoming, we are bringing a backdrop, and people will be able to come in here and take pictures for the week,” Edna Robles, owner of The Balloon Bar said.
Robles is also offering 10% off balloon orders to customers wearing NIU colors and with a valid OneCard. The store will also provide all balloons for the parade and for the stage this year.
Nearby, Cracker Jax, located at 118 N. Third St., continues its 41-year tradition of supporting Homecoming.
“We celebrate each homecoming that comes,” owner Lauren Woods said.
She also expressed pride in the collaborative local community.
“We love all the new stores that are coming in, the existing stores and locally owned restaurants. We welcome the NIU students,” Woods said. “If they mention they’re a student, they can have anything at 20% off.” The promotion will run from Monday to Sunday.
Hometown Sports Bar & Grill is also preparing for a high-energy weekend for those 21+ or accompanied by a guardian. Owner Tom Schmidt said Homecoming Week helps new students discover downtown and alumni relieve old memories, making it one of the liveliest stops in downtown DeKalb.
“I hope they have a great experience and remember their Homecoming as something memorable,” Schmidt said.
