DeKALB – The DeKalb County Health Department began accepting walk-in flu vaccinations on Sept. 29.
From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m Monday through Friday, the Health Department, located at 550 N. Annie Glidden Road, will offer walk-ins for flu vaccinations with no appointments needed for all aged six months and older.
“Getting your annual flu shot is one of the most effective steps you can take to avoid getting sick, reduce the severity of illness if you do catch the flu and help protect vulnerable members of our community,” Public Health Administrator Lisa Gonzalez said in a press release.
The Illinois Department of Public Health released updated evidence-based guidance for flu and RSV vaccines for Illinois residents last week. The guidelines emphasize the importance of seasonal flu vaccinations especially as circulating viruses change each year.
Though you can still catch the flu while being fully vaccinated, research shows vaccines reduce the severity of symptoms and lower the risk of hospitalization.
While walk-in’s are allowed, those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The Health Department is a Vaccine for Children provider and accepts most PPO insurance plans, Medicaid and Medicare Part B with no cost to the client. Clients must bring all insurance cards and a photo ID.
