DeKALB – The DeKalb Park District has launched several construction projects this year. In a press release, Marketing Manager Mikayla Wilhelm provided updates on some ongoing work and on what renovations will soon begin.
Sports and Recreation Center flooring project
The DeKalb Sports and Recreation Center underwent a flooring project this year with new flooring installation being completed in areas on the second floor including hallways, spectator seating, bathrooms and concessions.
The first floor is still undergoing construction, although resurfacing work has been finished. Renovations are still in progress in the main lobby as cove base installations continue to be worked on.
Work on all stair treads are set to begin in November, according to a press release from the DeKalb Park District. Other upgrades including new spectator seating and aesthetic improvements are set to continue through the fall.
Buena Vista irrigation project and driving range tee update
The irrigation system at Buena Vista Golf Course, which was originally installed in the early 1960s, helped maintain the health of the turf at the course. Many irrigation breaks have occurred recently however, wearing down the system.
The new irrigation system set to be complete in December will provide better water coverage for the turf, according to the press release.
The park district also plans to update the driving range on the golf course. Over the summer, bentgrass was planted behind the existing driving range mats. The mats are set to be removed during the fall and winter to provide an extended teeing area with up to 15,000 square feet of hitting space.
League of Women Voters Park update
After a public meeting in collaboration with the community and District Board members, a new playground option was chosen to replace the currently aging playground equipment at League of Women Voters Park.
Although the equipment is inspected regularly, the community voted on a new option to ensure safety and accessibility. The community was instrumental in obtaining other amenities including a half basketball court and a new game area.
The project will cost $742,000, but the district will receive a $600,000 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant which will help fund most of the project.
Hopkins Park Outdoor Pool facility renovation updates
The DeKalb Park District has been working with the Illinois Department of Public Health to obtain an Illinois Department of Public Health permit. This permit would give the district the opportunity to move forward with its planned construction of the new zero-depth pool, spray ground and water slides.
Along with the pool other new buildings such as a lifeguard office and first aid building are set to begin construction soon. The facility also anticipates new infrastructure including piping, electrical, sanitation, water mains and mechanical buildings.
The district is anticipating this project to be completed by summer 2026.
More information regarding these construction projects can be found on the DeKalb Park District website.
