Huskies look to rebound in fieldhouse showdown
December 4, 1990
When the University of Evansville Aces come to the Chick Evans Field House Tuesday night, they will find an NIU men’s basketball team that is trying to find an identity on offense.
The Huskies will attempt to rebound from the lackluster offensive performance they displayed at Minnesota Saturday. Although the Huskies played well defensively by limiting Minnesota to 42 percent from the field, the Huskies only shot 27 percent from the floor on their way to their first loss of the season.
“The shots will eventually come,” NIU Head Coach Jim Molinari said. “We have to continue to play good defense and try to limit our turnovers, but the shooting will come.”
NIU hopes that the shots will start dropping against an Evansville team that Molinari feels will be one of the better teams to visit the fieldhouse all year.
“Evansville is as good a team as we’ll see at home this year, and they play a style of basketball very similar to Indiana by playing strong defense and running a good motion offense,” Molinari said. “Their motion offense allows them good shot opportunities, and they have an excellent coach in Jim Crews.”
The Huskies are hoping that the NIU fans, featuring the “Dog Pound,” will help bring them victory.
The Dog Pound had a good turnout in its first-ever meeting Monday night at the fieldhouse. Students who missed the meeting can still be a part of the Dog Pound by attending the game Tuesday night. The first 300 students will be escorted to the pound to cheer on the Huskies.
At 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, the Huskies will begin to distribute tickets on a first-come, first-serve basis to students for the January 15 showdown against DePaul University.
Although the tickets are free for students, only a limited number of seats will be available for the contest. Students can receive a ticket by displaying their student ID’s. Coffee and donuts will be served in the morning.
