DeKalb – The city of DeKalb plans to redirect funds from the Community Development Block Grant Public Facilities and Infrastructure program to support the Family Service Agency’s Rise to Roots youth shelter, set to open in DeKalb.
A total of $50,000 from the city’s Program Year 2024 Action Plan will be used to provide housing and supportive services for youth aged between 14 and 24 who are experiencing homelessness, housing instability or unsafe living conditions.
The program will offer a supervised living environment with access to case management, counseling and life skills development, according to the city’s press release.
All of these services are aimed at helping participants find long-term housing stability and self-sufficiency.
Residents of DeKalb are invited to share feedback regarding the proposed amendment within a 30-day window which started on Oct. 11. and will end on Nov. 10. Written comments can be submitted to the city of DeKalb Community Development Department.
A public hearing will also be held during the Nov. 10 City Council meeting, providing residents with another opportunity to comment on the proposal. Comments must be received by 6 p.m. Nov. 10 to be considered.
Copies of the proposed Amendment to the Program Year 2024 Annual Action Plan will be available for public review at the DeKalb Public Library at 309 Oak St., the city’s Finance Department at 164 E. Lincoln Highway, first floor, the Community Development Department at 164 E. Lincoln Highway, second floor and on the city’s website.
The DeKalb Public Library, where the hearing will be held, is accessible from its Oak Street entrance.
Following the hearing, the City Council will consider final action on the proposed amendment. The amended document will then be sent to the Housing and Urban Development Chicago Regional Office on or before Nov. 14 for review and approval.
