County reports few difficulties

Overall, DeKalb County’s election day went “smoothly,” said the county clerk.
County Clerk Terry Desmond said other than an incident of alleged ‘vote buying’ outside Stevenson Towers, there were few problems Tuesday.
“We had complaints of a large number of signs outside polling places,” Desmond said. During every election, there are reports around the county that campaign workers have ut signs in public places without getting permission, he said.
However, if election judges decide a sign is inappropriate, the campaign workers usually assist in removing them, he said.
Another problem for voters Tuesday was the difficulty in getting to the poll at The Floor to Ceiling Store, 1515 W. Lincoln Hwy., because of construction. However, the state helped ease traffic problems by pouring gravel over the site to make access easier.
“We are always looking to try to improve,” he said.
Desmond said only three of the 78 polling places were not accessible to the handicapped. Those were NIU’s Lincoln and Douglas residence halls and the Bromley Apartments, 912 Edgebrook Dr., he said.
He said he is hoping NIU will consider making at least one of the entrances to Lincoln and Douglas halls accessible in the future.
