The last Student Association senator to push for Vice President Tanya Smith’s impeachment removed his name from the petition Friday.

After four out of five senators removed their names from the petition last week, Sen. Paul Fabrizius decided to keep his name on the list and go on with the impeachment proceedings.

However SA Speaker Preston Came said Fabrizius handed him a letter Friday asking for the removal of his name on the petition.

Sen. Sadia Ahmed also said she was going to sign the petition, but never followed through.

Fabrizius and Ahmed were not at Sunday’s meeting and could not be reached for comment.

Came told senators at the SA meeting Sunday that he spoke with Chief Justice Thomas Gary and Gary said he didn’t think a motion could be made at Sunday’s SA senate meeting since all of the names were taken off the impeachment petition.

In other business, the senate unanimously supported pushing back the Illinois Student Association referendum date from Nov. 28 to the senate election day next spring semester.

Though no specific new date was set, the senate decided that the vote should not be held later than the second week of Februrary.

The decision to move the date came after the SA Supreme Court suggested that the SA Constitution requires a petition signed by 1,226, (5 percent of students) to have a referendum.

Sen. Keith Smith questioned if other referendums in the past began with the required petition.

Thomas said he did not know, but he said past referendums were not relevent to the court’s opinion.

“Just because they broke the law in the past does not mean you can break the law in the future,” he said.

Former SA President Paula Radtke said signatures were collected when NIU students voted in the ISA referendum two years ago.
