‘No-war’ demonstration slated for Saturday
November 9, 1990
A no-war rally to protest the increasingly volatile situation in the Middle East will be held Saturday in Huntley Park.
The rally will feature live music, speakers from the Wesley Foundation, United Campus Ministries, Interfaith Network and the Marxist-Humanist Forum. Audience speakers are welcome.
Sondra King, a member of the Interfaith Network, said she hopes people will come and express their feelings.
Marxist-Humanist member Tom Rainey said the rally will last from 2 p.m. until “there’s nobody left to speak.” Huntley Park is located at Second and Garden streets, three blocks south of Lincoln Highway.
“The best thing that could come out of this would be if a lot of different people from various backgrounds get together and have a battle of ideas,” Rainey said.
He said there is no blueprint to prevent wars and but marches, rallies and protests provide an arena for thoughts and ideas to be debated.
Rainey said organization members involved in the rally have been passing out fliers at high schools, local factories and NIU.
He said he expects more than 100 people to attend the rally. “A lot of people have said it’s about time someone organized an anti-war rally,” he said.
Interfaith Network co-coordinator Cecile Meyer said she also heard positive remarks about the rally. “A lot of people have said to me they are happy something is being done,” she said.
“People have been very interested when we hand out our fliers,” King said. She said she believes there is growing wave of dissatisfaction about the handling of the crisis.
Meyer said she hopes the rally will send a message to Washington, D.C., to find a way for peaceful negotiations to resolve the crisis.
