Smith blamed for poor SA handling
November 8, 1990
More than half of the Student Association’s members are fed up and blaming Vice President Tanya Smith for the way things are running.
Sen. Mike Ruderman, who said there is a communication breakdown with Smith, said Smith does several things on her own and does not tell the senate what’s happening until they question her.
“We’re not being kept abreast of what the situations are,” Ruderman said.
However, Smith said none of the senators have discussed the alleged lack of communication with her. “I cannot interpret other people’s feelings unless they communicate that to me,” she said.
Ruderman also said Smith’s reports are often late and she hasn’t provided senators with meeting agendas for weeks.
Smith said it is unfair to single her out for being the only one who has not had staff reports completed by Friday, adding she also is not the only one who has missed meetings.
At the last SA meeting, Smith said she would not be distributing meeting agendas every week because it wastes paper.
However, Ruderman said Smith didn’t tell anyone she was doing this. “Even Dave Ivers—the president pro term who follows the agenda to a ‘t’—didn’t know what is going on until we asked,” he said.
Ivers said he followed the agenda provided in the SA bylaws while Smith was absent.
Smith said Ivers told her that while she was gone, the senators decided not to have a new agenda every week.
Ivers, however, said he doesn’t recall saying that. He said he might have said it was his opinion not to print a new one each week, but denied the senators requested it.
