SSU to delay decision on strike until after meeting

Sangamon State University faculty and staff will delay a decision on a possible strike until Tuesday, when they can find out if money needed to boost their salaries is there.
Mitch Vogel, president of University Professionals of Illinois, the union which represents SSU faculty, said they will postpone a strike until after a Tuesday meeting to discuss appropriations of the university.
“The university has plenty of money to give these people (the SSU faculty) their salary increases,” he said.
The House Appropriations Committee II will hear the testimony of faculty, Vogel said.
“Hopefully after they (the committee) hear the testimony, they’ll back us up and it won’t have to lead to a strike,” he said.
“There is a fund of money at SSU that is not being used for salaries,” said Cheryl Peck, assistant to Regents Chancellor Roderick Groves. “I assume that’s what the meeting is for.”
Peck said Groves has not decided whether he will attend the meeting. The meeting will be held in Springfield at 10 a.m.
“We were asked to hold off on the strike (by the Board of Regents) until this meeting takes place on Tuesday,” he said.
