Now that the 98th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, has concluded, the Northern Star has a winner for the Northern Star Academy Awards Film Contest.
Carter Leshock, a first-year accountancy major, guessed all six of the biggest categories correctly. Leshock’s prize after winning the contest is a $25 Visa gift card.
Leshock didn’t select his picks based on personal preference, but by predicting who the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would vote for.
“That’s not how you can usually go about predictions. Usually a lot of my predictions weren’t necessarily my favorites, but it’s more just like picking up on the general voting and how the academy usually votes,” Leshock said.
In order to win the contest, participants had to predict the closest ballot of winners for the six biggest categories: best picture, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress and best director.
For Leshock, the outcome of the ceremony came as no surprise.
“I watched the show, and I was like, I think I knew everything that was going to happen,” Leshock said.
