SCAW asks for dumping of Gillette

Animal welfare activists are asking consumers to dump their Gillette products Wednesday and Thursday to protest the company’s treatment of animals.

Protestors feel the Gillette Company conducts unnecessary safety tests harmful to animals, said Laura Martin and Kileen Murphy, co-presidents of the Student Committee for Animal Welfare.

The committee will have boxes and a table outside the Pow Wow to collect any Gillette products from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Martin said. She said the box will be mailed back to Gillette.

The company produces well-known products like White Rain shampoo, PaperMate pens and Liquid Paper correction fluid.

Martin said the harmful animal tests include injecting products to determine toxicity, applying deodorant to their skin for days which causes blistering and dropping shampoo in rabbits’ eyes.

“This is the strongest effort taken against them (Gillette),” Murphy said. She said the collection is coordinated with Saturday’s National Dump Gillette Day sponsored by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

PETA has met some success with large companies like Avon and Revlon, which banned animal experiments last year. The national organization has been putting pressure on Gillette to follow the cosmetic industries’ lead.

Gillette told the Boston Globe last year they had a moral and a legal responsibility to make sure their products are safe. The company could not be reached for further comment.

Martin said Gillette does not feel the need to respond to public pressure because of its size and the popularity of its products.

“If they can still make money and test on animals, they’ll just keep doing it,” she said.
