Rape report false
September 12, 1990
No charges were filed against an NIU student who police said falsely accused another NIU student of raping her, the DeKalb County State’s Attorney said.
“I don’t expect charges to be filed against the victim,” said DeKalb County State’s Attorney Mike Coghlan.
“The victim admitted to us that the crime as she reported it did not occur,” said DeKalb County Sheriff’s Police Capt. Jim Laben. “There was no rape.”
Laben said he had mixed feelings about prosecuting the victim for bringing false charges against the man.
“On one hand, she ran us through the hoops and I think the charges should be brought. On the other hand, I don’t know what bringing charges against her would do to stop false rape reports from being made,” he said.
The unidentified NIU student said she was raped Aug. 29 at Katz Park on Dresser Road, police reports stated.
