Director of co-op explains program

As he sat in his newly-acquired director’s chair, Doug Davis paused to take it all in. “I’m one of the last of the original staff.”

Davis, formerly the Cooperative Eduacation Coordinator became the program’s new director on Aug. 1, 1990.

The program allows students to recieve information about co-op positions and internships. Students interested complete an application and speak with a coordinator or adviser.

“We deal with majors from art to zoology—”a” to “z”—and everything in between,” Davis said.

The program began in 1984, and with the help of Davis it became a leader in Cooperative Education statewide and nationally among those colleges which do not require students to participate.

“I will make no major changes in procedure or policy. I will just do whatever is best to service students and give them hands-on experience,” Davis said.

Presently, 3100 students are enrolled in the program with 1400 already placed in either a co-op or internship position. Davis hopes to see the program expand to include one-fourth the student body or more, about 5000 students.

Davis said 70 percent of the students in the program get their first job offer from their co-op employer.
