Greeks liable for IFC rules

Prospective fraternities at NIU will have to follow all the rules if they want to become active members of the Interfraternity Council.
All chapters of national fraternities recognized by NIU, the Student Association or IFC will be responsible for following IFC rules, according to new bylaws approved Sunday by the IFC.
IFC President Robert Martin said new fraternities Alpha Kappa Lambda and Sigma Lambda Beta must adhere to IFC policies on Rush, alcohol and “anything under IFC jurisdiction,” Martin said.
After contacting IFC, interested fraternities become members after a two-thirds vote, usually taking three semesters, he said.
In other business, the council cleaned out unnecessary wording and outdated policies from its constitution and bylaws, Martin said. Unwritten but currently followed policies were added, he said.
There also was a revision made to the judicial board rules to eliminate biases, Martin said. When a case comes before the board involving the chief justice’s greek house, he will step down and serve as a regular justice for the deliberation of that case, he said.
Also, Martin said members discussed this year’s Homecoming activities and said they want competitive activites that fraternities enjoy.
Homecoming rules will be finalized at next week’s meeting, he said. “We have many new representatives and we’re trying to make sure each house gets an equal say,” he said.
