NIU problem inspires idea
September 18, 1990
NIU has a problem with safety. Curt Stein, Student Association campus welfare adviser, wants to do something about it.
Stein said he believes the Security Advisory Commission’s role should be changed, expanded, or a new organization should be created. The commission advises NIU and University Police on all security matters.
The SA has proposed a Safety Council be established to specifically deal with safety matters. The proposal comes before the NIU Steering Commission Sept. 26. If accepted it would go to the university for approval.
Stein said there should be a Safety Council. He said the members of this proposed council should be safety specialists, not faculty members and students with responsibilities.
The commission is now made up of faculty members selected by NIU and students selected by the SA.
Stein said the proposed council could advise NIU in all areas of safety. The council would also be in charge of distributing all information on safety, such as pamphlets on drug education and sexually transmitted diseases.
The council also would distribute a campus safety manual. The SA compiled a safety manual for this year and will publish it soon. In the future, if NIU accepts the SA’s proposal, responsibility for the manual would fall to the Safety Council.
Stein said the SA would be happy to work with the present Security Advisory Commission in establishing the proposed Safety Council.
