SA candidates obtain student signatures

Since the extension of the Student Association senate election, 33 more petitions were picked up at the SA office.
A total of 65 students took petitions for the 40 senate seats, said Jodie English, SA Recreation Committee adviser.
The students are required to get 200 signatures of fellow students, although the signatures do not have to come from the same district as the candidate. Once the petitioners have their signatures, they can turn their petition in and be put on the SA senate election ballot.
“It wasn’t that bad getting 200 signatures,” said Christina Han, 20, a junior communications major.
“It shows that people are dedicated and they’ll work for something they want,” said Han, who got 200 signatures in two days.
Paul Brizz, 20, a junior marketing major, said getting 200 signatures is worth the time because “it is a way to get your name out.”
The potential candidates said they got most of the signatures around the Holmes Student Center and the residence halls and by talking to friends before class.
“The publicity wasn’t that good for the elections,” said Kevin Craver, 19, a sophomore computer science major. “In fact, it was pretty close to none.”
Craver said he saw someone walking down the street with a petition and he asked him where he could get one. So far, Craver hasn’t been able to return the petition.
But, “getting signatures isn’t that hard if you know where to look,” said Craver, who picked up his petition Monday and already has close to 100 signatures.
However, the lack of advertising remains a problem. Senior Stephen Martinet said they don’t think the SA advertised enough.
“I would publicize a lot earlier in the school year,” said the 21-year-old computer science major. Also, while Martinet said 200 signatures is “extreme,” he was able to get them.
