SATF director profiles rapists

By Karri E. Christiansen

Anyone is a potential target for a rapist.

Bev Beetham, director of the Sexual Assault Task Force, said female and male students possibly are in danger of being raped.

“Although assailants are usually male, males can be victims,” Beetham said.

She said a possible profile of a rapist might include men who:

Have a hostility toward women or domineering personalities and think of women as “property.”

Conform to society’s sexual stereotypes of males who always get what they want, are rough and strong.

Have some unrealistic views of women. Beetham said if a man is disappointed by a woman in some way, he might take out his disappointment in the form of a sexual assault.

“Some men feel they know a woman’s wishes better than the woman does,” Beetham said. “He needs to learn to accept a woman’s decision.”

Students also must consider the role of alcohol in sexual assaults, Beetham said.
