‘Truth’ is wrong
September 12, 1990
Scott Stocking (“Moral Defense,” 9-11-90) posits an “absolute truth” that homosexuality is “morally and ethically wrong” and uses this to support the ROTC’s discriminatory policy against homosexuals.
Perhaps if his conception could be validated, such regulation of human thought and behavior could legitmately be argued; however, I know of no universal acceptance of his “truth,” nor do I believe that human relationships are under the jurisdiction of anyone but those involved in these relationships.
The issue of whether the ROTC should be banned can now be seen as a conflict between personal liberty and heterosexual hegemony.
Just as Scott Stocking exercised his personal freedom in choosing his career and faith, so all people should have this same privilege regardless of sexual or philosophical orientation.
Sadly, Mr. Stocking exhibits the mentality that freeedom of choice is a punishable offense if the choice made deviates from the norm he pledges allegiance to.
Morals are intrinsic to human beings, but when certain ones are selected as “absolute” and correct for all people, they become autocratic decrees.
When a person must compromise or suppress his/her fundamental principles in order to pursue a means of sustenance, one is alienated from his/her society.
We at NIU can address this travesty by showing that “Unity in Diversity” is not just a slogan that appears every September but is an inclusive moral plea for cultural tolerance and the dignified treatment of all people.[[XR]]
