NIU women’s golf team grabs Redbird Tourney

Nicole Jeray fired a winning 36-hole 151 to lead the NIU women’s golf team to victory at the weekend 17-team Illinois State University Redbird Invitational in Normal. Jeray’s medalist showing and the Huskie team win is NIU’s second tournament double of the three-week old fall season.

The Huskies outdistanced runner-up University of Illinois by 19 strokes, 630-649. Michigan State University claimed third with a two-day 658 while Southern Illinois University was fourth (662) and host ISU fifth (664).

“I have never been so excited. Every one of our players carded great scores Saturday and Sunday, coming back from poor shots to gety eagle, birdie and par holes,” NIU coach Pam Tyska said. “From the clubhouse coach’s talk, it is pretty evident we are the team to beat in next weekend’s Wisconsin Lady Northern Invitational.”

Jeray shot a par 73 Saturday then twice chipped in birdie putts Sunday to earn a two-stroke win over runner-up Renee Helken of Illinois. The junior won and lead NIU to the Notre Dame Irish Fall invitational championship Labor day weekend. Four other Huskies followed Jeray’s lead finishing in the top ten. Sharon Humphrey shot a 159 for third place while Kim Hodge’s 160 tied her at fifth with two others.
