Henley is out of bounds
September 19, 1990
The rules don’t need to be reviewed, they just need to be followed, although Barbara Henley, Student Affairs vice president, thinks otherwise.
The Board Of Regents set parameters that state the NIU administratrion has the power to veto funding decisions made by the Student Association senate concerning SA-recognized groups, but it does not have the power to allocate money.
But Henley violated those rules by giving $850 worth of art show refreshments to the Campus Activities Board Art Committee, and after the SA vetoed it.
However, she is going to clear up the problem by reaching an agreement with students and reviewing the Regents’ rules.
The rules were established to give students some control over what happens to their fees and ensure the SA’s fiscal responsibility through an admininstrator.
Henley is playing games. Either students have say in where their money goes, or they don’t. And if she wants the power to allocate SA funds to student organizations herself, then she should come out from behind the curtain and let students know where she stands.
As vice president os Student Affairs, Henley should be sympathetic to student needs and stay in their corner at all times. Instead, she appears to be battling against students and trying to make sure the student voice is silenced – or on its way to silence.
Henley should either play by the rules or not play at all.
