Candidates use last day of publicity
September 18, 1990
Candidates will jump from anonimity to the public eye today on the one day of campaigning before the Student Association’s senate election Wednesday and Thursday.
Forty candidates will rely on word of mouth, posters, flyers and support from friends to get the word out as fast as possible.
Dave Fornell, campaign manager for the Constitutional Party running seven candidates, said his party has 18 supporters to publicize his candidates.
“We do not want a recurrence of what happened last year with people winning with only two votes,” Fornell said.
Other candidates, such as Orville Maclin of the fifth district, are not as elaborate. Maclin said he will rely on flyers in his campaign.
“I feel there is really not enough time for a real campaign,” Maclin said. “I think it (flyers) is effective and easy.”
Competing fifth district candidate Drew Krenke said he will use flyers to get his name out, but he will get his message out throught word of mouth.
“You can find out so much more by talking to people,” Krenke said.
Some senators said there biggest problem will be to fight student apathy.
Ian Coburn from the fourth district said his goal is to get people out to vote as well as winning.
“Generally, there is a lack of interest here and across the nation,” Coburn said. He said he wants to hand out flyers and hang posters.
District two candidate Paul Fabrizius said he will make personal contact to get votes. “I am going to talk to a lot of greek organizations and go door to door at apartments,” Fabrizius said.
alf of the candidates attended a meeting Monday to discuss the campaign rules. Election Commissioner Alfred Tatum said campaigning will only be allowed outside the classroom.
There will be four candidates in district one, eleven candidates each in districts two, four and five, and three candidates in district three.
