Election season approaches fast

It’s election time.
There are two U.S. Congressional races that DeKalb residents will vote on in the Nov. 6 election. U.S. Rep. Lynn Martin, R-Loves Park, is running against incumbent Sen. Paul Simon, D-Illinois. Incumbent Republican Dennis Hastert and Democrat Donald Westpahl vie for the 14th District seat.
Democratic Attorney General Neil Hartigan and Republican Secretary of State Jim Edgar are running to replace outgoing Gov. James Thompson. On the ticket for lieutenant governor are Democrat James Burns and Republican Bob Kustra.
The Solidarity Party, formed by Adlai Stevenson, is running Jessie Fields and Marisellis Brown for governor and lieutenant governor.
Republican Lieutenant Governor George Ryan and Democratic Treasurer Jerry Cosentino are fighting for the Secretary of State post. Democratic Comptroller Roland Burris and Republican Jim Ryan are going for Attorney General.
Locally, Republican Nancy Beasley is challenging incumbent Democrat Patrick Welch for the state senate. Democrat Robert Tisch and Republican J. Bradley Burzynski are running for the state representative seat being vacated by Rep. John Countryman, R-DeKalb.
Also, in the DeKalb County Board races, Republican Jodie English and Democrat Thomas Gary are running for the sixth district seat, which contains Grant Towers, Douglas Hall and Stevenson Towers. Democrat Tom Elkins and Republican Tim Bagby are running for the seventh district seat, which contains Lincoln Hall, the Neptune Complex and Gilbert Hall. Jon Bockman is running unopposed in the fifth disrict, which contains Greek Row. These county board candidates are NIU students.
