Officer Lovell has tips on avoidance of campus crimes

By Stewart Warren

John Lovell, a university police officer and member of the Sexual Assault Task Force, has tips for NIU students trying to avoid crimes.

If you are at a party, make sure someone knows where you are and where you are going if you leave.

When drinking alcohol, pace yourself. Alcohol kills judgement. Don’t get drunk.

Don’t accept rides from people you have just met. Call a friend or on Thursday, Friday or Saturday from 2-6 a.m. call the Late Night Ride Service at 753-1661.

Be assertive and articulate. “No!” is hard to misunderstand.

Keep thinking all the time. You are always the most important person anywhere. Always do what is right for you and don’t give in to peer pressure.

Plan ahead during your daily routine. Don’t wait until late at night to do the laundry or go jogging.

Don’t be afraid of the police. They are here for you, and love to answer questions.

Sexual Assault Response Team officers will talk to you anytime about anything at 753-1212. If you become a victim of a sexual assault, remember that you are a crime victim. Give them a call and they will explain your options and respect your wishes.
