CAB fall film schedule marked with not-to-be-missed movies

By Patrick Cummings

School has just started. If you have had a chance to look around, you may have noticed the fall Campus Activities Board film schedule posted or published somewhere. CAB is indeed offering a good selection of movies to be seen this semester.

However, some of these movies playing definitely should not be missed. For example:

“This is Spinal Tap” Sept. 6 and 8. Director Rob Reiner’s (better known as “the meathead”) pseudo-documentary of the fictitious rock group Spinal Tap is a sharp and hilarious stab at the music industry. The movie takes jabs at everything from comeback groups to heavy metal. This is the movie for multiple viewings as well.

“Drugstore Cowboy,” Sept. 7. In all the hype and praise that went along with Tom Cruise and his portrayal of Ron Kovic in “Born on the Fourth of July” (showing September 21) many mainstream audiences overlooked the critically acclaimed performance of another former teen heart-throb, Matt Dillon. In this film Dillon plays the leader of a group of junkies travelling the west coast and ripping off drugstores to support their habits. Instead of being a sermon-serving two hour “just say no” commercial, this movie is a story of self-discovery and the ironic twists of life. The production values aren’t the greatest here, but the movie is still well done. Also, look for a cameo by literary outlaw William Burroughs as the junky priest Tom.

“The Princess Bride,” showing October 18 and 19. The back of the novel that this movie is based on reads, “What if the most beautiful woman in the world marries the most handsome prince in the world…and he turns out to be a son of a b—-?” You can learn the answer to this question by seeing the movie.

“The Shining” and “The Exorcist,” both Oct. 25. Both of these contemporary classics display the true meaning of both horror and terror. Sitting through both of these will chill you to the bone and leave you drained.

“The War of the Roses,” Nov. 9. This brilliant black comedy is the typical story of boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy marries girl, girl wants divorce, boy and girl proceed to beat the living daylights out of each other. Girls, I wouldn’t recommend you taking your guys to this one however.

And there you have it. Your fun-filled guide to this fall’s movies. Don’t forget your popcorn.
