Permit garage improbable for students, staff

Limited parking space for students and faculty have led to consideration for a parking garage, but according to NIU officials, a garage is unlikely.

Possibilities for a parking garage were considered by a subcommittee of the NIU Parking Committee appointed by Chairman Rob Bornhuetter in April.

However, Bornhuetter said the possiblity for a garage this semester is slim.

Pat Hewitt, associate vice president of Business and Operations, said the price for a garage would be much more expensive than a ground-level lot.

Each space of a ground-level lot costs $2,000 and each space in a garage would cost $7,000, Hewitt said.

NIU Parking Committee Chairman Robert Bornhuetter said at Illinois State University at Normal, the high rise garages cost between $5 and $6 million.

Hewitt said NIU would have to look at a garage in terms of a visitor lot to help pay for the garage. The lot also would have some reserve spaces for faculty and staff with permits, she said.

She said another problem with the garage would be that there is no space to build it on campus.
