Holy reconsiders funding guidelines
August 28, 1990
Student Association Treasurer Mike Holy wants to keep his campaign promise of fairness and consistency by possibly establishing more specific guidelines for SA funding of campus organizations.
Holy said the guidelines used now might be too general. He said he wants the new or old laws to be more understandable because the language tends to be overly bureaucratic.
“We want something that is procedural rather than arbitrary,” Holy said.
The current procedure involves an organization representative explaining the group’s need for student funds in front of the student senate followed by a recommendation from the financial committee, a brief debate and a vote.
The funding requests also were proposed on paper in an itemized list which the financial committee could review in depth before the budget session.
oly said he will not make a specific proposal to change procedures until he gets input from students and organizations, adding he is willing to listen to any suggestions.
“Everyone in the university is open to be in the finance committee,” Holy said.
He said one option would be to establish a percentage of the total amount organizations could spend on line items, such as advertising and office supplies.
Students and organizations approached him during his campaign last spring and said funds were not being handed out fairly, Holy said. He said he is investigating to find out whether changes in the procedure are needed.
He said he does not feel he has to make changes if they are not necessary. “I might not do it at all,” Holy said.
