Foss almost wears U.S. colors
June 19, 1990
NIU women’s basketball standout Lisa Foss raised some eyebrows, but missed the final cut for a chance to wear a “USA” jersey.
The 5-7 Huskie guard was one of the final 70 players bidding for a position with one of the three United States National Teams during tryouts at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The final cut produces the players for the U.S. entry in the World Chanpionships and the Goodwill Games, as well as two select squads which compete in Europe and Asia.
Foss was originally one of 21 players chosen June 1 from among 75 players competing in Open Division tryouts. Those 21 were added to the 49 invited participants.
Foss is the top returning scorer (19.5 points per game) from a 1989-90 Huskie team which reached the second round of the NCAA tournament en route to a 26-5 record that included the North Star regular and post-season championships.
