SA recycling center hopes to expand campus efforts

The Student Association has big plans to broaden its already successful recycling center on campus next fall.

Last year, the SA used Lincoln Hall and Stevenson Towers North as their pilot buildings for newspaper recycling. Douglas Hall was used as a pilot program for recycling aluminum.

“The program was extremely successful. We managed to recycle over five million pounds of newspaper,” said SA Recycling Center Director Dave Broustis.

In the past, NIU was responsible for a pick-up service for the residence halls, a drop-off center for people who do not live on campus and a monthly curbside pickup service done on the first Saturday of each month for DeKalb residents.

Broustis said, the SA plans on extending their service to every residence hall and many of the campus buildings. “I’m 90 percent sure that we should have at least one bin in each residence hall in the fall,” he said.

On June 2, the SA conducted its last monthly curbside service. The city of DeKalb has a new garbage contract which will take over the program and extend the service to once a week.

During its 10 year existence, the SA curbside program recycled about 15 tons of newspaper, aluminum, plastic and glass products.

Broustis said, the campus pick up service and the drop off center existed for 13 years, but its popularity increased in the past couple of years.

Anyone wanting to recycle over the summer can go to the drop off center just west of Stevenson Towers South residence hall, he said.
