DSA lecture focuses on women’s issues

The NIU Democratic Socialists of merica is sponsoring their first outreach program Thursday.

Sherri Levine, national political education director for DSA, will speak at room 405 of the Holmes Student Center at 9 p.m.

The lecture will cover topics such as women’s rights regarding abortion and governmental child care, said DSA Member Tom Ellett.

“We are pro-choice,” he said. “Most liberal pro-choice groups in socialist-feminist perspective believe that not only does a woman have the right to have an abortion, but she also has the right for proper care if she chooses to have the child.”

State-provided chihd care and extended leave of absence from work is needed, Ellett said. This idea is already in effect in other countries, he said.

The DSA believes that “in attempting to reduce sex solely to its procreative function, the Supreme Court and its idealogical forces would deny us those rights, rendering women mere incubators and children the punishment for sexual activity,” according to a DSA pamphlet.

“Comprehensive sex education, safe, affordable birth control and safe, legal abortion” is the DSA’s socialist vision of reproductive rights, according to a DSA pamphlet.
