Home play ends with victory

NIU scored just enough runs in game one and went “bats wild” in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader sweep of visiting Northwestern University Wednesday at Huskie Diamond.

NIU beat the Wildcats 1-0 in the opener then scored a big 5-1 victory in game two. The sweep improved the Huskies to 23-19-2. Northwestern slipped to 13-32. NIU went to town offensively, pounding the Wildcats’ pitching for seven hits in each game. Included in the 14 hit total were four doubles, one triple and one inside the park home run. The home run was by catcher Julie Sexton.

“We definitely hit the ball very well. That is the best we have ever hit off four-year Northwestern pitcher Amy Redmer,” said Huskie head coach Dee Abrahamson.

Kristen Vandenhouten picked up her ninth win of the season in game one, while Rachel Ortiz notched her 14th victory on the year. NIU closes the season Friday at DePaul University.
