HSC closes upper seats of Sandburg

Students attending weekend movies at the Holmes Student Center’s Sandburg Auditorium will find the upper seats off limits.

Student Center Director Judd Baker said seats in the upper portion of the auditorium are closed off because of low attendance and cleaning purposes.

“Only about 150 to 200 people come to the movies each night and there are 420 seats, not counting the wings on the lower portion that can be used,” Baker said.

Only when the lower portion fills up, he said, the upper seats will be opened for students’ use.

“I don’t think it will take away from the students’ (enjoyment),” Baker said. “They could still sit every other seat if they wanted to.”

Campus Activities Board Films Coordinator Jennifer Langell said, “As long as they get a decent seat, there shouldn’t be any problems.”

Langell said if a majority of students attending the films complain, CAB will consider reopening the upper seats.

However, she said they have not received any complaints since the seats were first roped off the last weekend of March.

Baker said using only the lower portion also will cut down on time spent cleaning the auditorium when the movie lets out.

“This would be more efficient, cutting the time spent cleaning the auditorium down from two and one-half hours to about one hour,” he said.

Langell said closing off the upper seats will make the cleaning process easier and less time consuming. “We’re trying to help Judd Baker and his staff out,” she said.
