SA, church donate new clothing bin for needy

DeKalb Mayor Greg Sparrow will be the first to put his clothes in the Student Association’s clothing bin at a ceremony Saturday.

Sparrow will attend a ceremony at the Recycling Center at 10 a.m. Saturday. The ceremony is to dedicate the SA’s new clothing bin located at the Recycling Center, said SA Public Relations Adviser Tracey Havener.

Clothing in the bin will be given to the DeKalb homeless, she said. The bin is being sponsored by the SA and the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 300 E. Taylor St.

“The clothing will go from the Recycling Center to the church to the homeless,” Havener said.

Printed on the bin is “Recycle Clothing: Donations for the Needy,” said SA President Huda Scheidelman.

“The majority of the products remain in the local community. Some are distributed nationally,” she said.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church is the only service providing free clothing in DeKalb, Scheidelman said.

Recycling Center Director Dave Broustis will take the clothes to the church when the bin is full, she said.

“The reason we put resources and time into this project is because our goal is to assist any needy member of the DeKalb community, as well as students,” Scheidelman said.

“The SA will promote the clothing bin. It’s a good alternative to the Salvation Army,” Broustis said.

People can drop off clothing when they drop off their recycling, he said. The Recycling Center is open 24 hours a day, so it will be easy for people to drop clothes off, Broustis said.

“I think we’ll get a lot of clothes because we have many people who recycle,” he said.
