Seven-game win streak has tennis team aiming high

The weather is hot, and the NIU men’s tennis team is streaking—as in seven consecutive dual-meet victories.

DePaul University suffered the most recent loss to the Huskies. The 7-2 win gives the Huskies a 16-11 season record before competing in the Association of Mid-Continent Universities Championship this weekend in Akron, Ohio.

“Winning our last seven matches helps prove we’re peaking at the right time. We’re playing good, solid tennis,” said NIU coach Charles Merzbacher, in his first year at the position. “Our singles was a bit shaky (against DePaul), but I think that was due to our layoff and adjusting to playing on clay courts.

Steve Senter definitely deserves a pat on the back, he’s 8-0 since stepping into the line-up at No. 6 singles. I’m very happy with our No. 3 doubles team’s come-from-behind win. We need for Dustin (Dobrin) and Ralph (Platz) to play well at the AMCU meet. We need everyone from top to bottom, singles to doubles.”

NIU’s Mats Persson and Erik Andersch played strong for the Huskies in the No.1 and No.2 slots, while Greg O’Neil and Senter rallied for three-set winners at the No. 2 and 6 positions for a 4-2 NIU lead going into doubles. Persson-Andersch and O’Neil-Senter used only two sets to add the No.1 and 2 doubles matches to NIU’s win column while Dobrin and Platz battled back for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory at No.3 for an NIU doubles sweep. The loss dropped DePaul’s record to 12-5.

NIU plans on receiving the No.2 seed for dual-meet style AMCU tourney with NIU having beaten each league foe faced with the exception of six-time defending champ Southwestern Missouri State University.
