‘Humorous’ film producer to discuss AIDS, diseases

A film producer and director is coming to NIU to talk about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases Tuesday.

Suzi Landolphi will give a noon presentation in the King Memorial Commons. She will speak about AIDS and other STD’s, said Renee Esgar, University Programming and Activites adviser.

“Suzi Landolphi talks about AIDS in an extremely non-threatening way,” Esgar said. “Landolphi is humorous in her approach, very confrontive and realistic.”

Landolphi, who has lectured as an AIDS educator at high schools, colleges and civic organizations, is a five-year volunteer with the AIDS Action Committee and has worked with the Hospice Care for People with AIDS.

Health Educator Steven Lux said Landolphi will “help our objectives of reducing STD’s on campus.”

Students at NIU are unaware of STD’s, Lux said. Students are aware of AIDS, but there are some misconceptions about it, he said.

“Last year, there were over 2,500 visits at the Health Center involving STD’s,” he said.

The presentation is being held in the commons because of its openness. Students will not feel confined, Esgar said.

Landolphi has appeared at other universities including the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and Purdue University, Esgar said. At Purdue, Landolphi spoke to a crowd of 1,500 students in a shopping mall, she said.

The presentation is sponsored by Campus Activities Board and Health Enhancement Services.
