Sponsors of DUI Week set up two-car display
April 4, 1990
Students who drink and drive can expect cramped space according to two smashed cars with shattered glass, bent doors and twisted seats.
The two-car display on Carroll Avenue was set up for DUI Awareness Week sponsored by Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students (BACCHUS), Health Enhancement Services and Sigma Pi fraternity.
The theme of the week, April 2 to 5, is “Don’t Get Wrecked.”
The purpose of the display was “to make the university aware of the severity of DUI,” said BACCHUS President Joel Gregoire.
Gregoire said several students walked by the accident.
“We are trying to show all of the angles of what can happen to you with DUI,” Gregoire said. “You could get arrested, go to jail or die.”
One event planned in honor of the week is a mocktail or non-alcoholic bar set up in Neptune Central tonight at 7 p.m. A DeKalb police officer will explain sobriety test procedures.
Gregoire said last fall’s Alcohol Awareness Week included a similar display involving people in a mock DUI accident, which made a good impact on students. DUI Awareness Week did not have enough volunteers to organize more than the display, he said.
“We are trying to get different outlooks of DUI,” Gregoire said.
A panel of speakers will address DUIs at the Holmes Student Center’s Capital Room Thursday night at 9 p.m.
Gregoire said the speech will include a lawyer’s outlook on legal processes a drunk driver goes through, a nurse talking about DUI accident victims and a police officer speaking on what he looks for when he pulls someone over.
BACCHUS representatives stood by the smashed cars handing out brochures on drinking tips and alcohol mythology.
The brochure’s strategies to set limits on how much a student drinks are counting drinks and swizzle sticks, alternating with non-alcoholic drinks, taking only a limited amount of money, ordering food and going home.
