Out of Bounds
April 29, 1990
This letter was written in response to Joel W. Piper’s opinion about my letter to the editor, which was published in The Northern Star on April 9.
I would like to make it perfectly clear that I DO doubt that the Gay Lesbian Union’s tactics are helping to “educate and break down our persistent stereotypes of homosexuality.” However, I don’t have a problem with anyone trying to break down unjust stereotypes, as long as they stay within reasonable boundaries.
The GLU crossed the line when they made their own set of unfair stereotypes about heterosexuals and published them in the questionnaire. Two wrongs don’t make a right! You can’t possibly expect to stop someone from insulting you by insulting them back. It then turns into a non-stop battle.
If anything, these kinds of tactics create more negative responses than there were to begin with. Insults are not a way to educate people, they just keep the battle going.
The GLU is trying SO hard to change the public’s opinion of homosexuality, that they don’t realize they’re hurting their cause instead of helping it. Changes happen slowly over time.
If you try to force someone to instantly change their set values and beliefs, they end up having STRONGER negative feelings toward your organization. Maybe the GLU should just relax and let the necessary changes happen slowly and naturally over time, instead of using these unproductive methods.
