Park District plans for fun

It’s spring and the DeKalb Park District is getting ready for kids of all ages who want to have some fun.

In addition to the regular schedule of flower planting that the park district will complete in late spring, it will offer more activities for both children and adults.

Park District Facility Manager Steve Sherrill said athletic activities offered this spring include softball, baseball, tennis, golf and swimming.

“Spring is a big time for the pool,” he said.

Pool passes go on sale May 2, he said. Prices are $30 for adults, $15 for children’s passes when bought with at least one adult pass or $20 when bought without an adult pass. The $15 children’s pass also is a family pass.

Sherrill said the passes include free use of both waterslides at Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road. The park opens June 2.

Folks looking to get back in touch with nature can take a leisurely walk down the Nature Trail, Sherrill said. The trail is open daily and is located north of Hopkins Park. It begins at Sycamore Road and continues to north First Street.

Walkers are not required to use guides, he said.

Gloria Oesterling, DeKalb Park District program director, said programs offered through the district include early child playtime, which is a recreational class that allows for arts and crafts, songs and games.

Tennis lessons are offered for all ages and there are ballet classes available for children from 3 to 6-years old, Oesterling said.

Parents who bought puppies for their kids can enroll the pups in a dog obedience class that the park district now offers.

While children learn to take their first steps and begin playing with their dogs, parents can learn to use video cameras and film the events in progress. Oesterling said the park district now offers a course that teaches people to use video equipment properly.

She said there are a variety of exercise classes to be held throughout the day as well as various athletic programs for both boys and girls.
