Lecture series focuses on civil and criminal law

The Greek Lecture Series continues with the presentation of “Legal Considerations for Student Leaders” Wednesday in the Holmes Student Center Carl Sandburg Auditorium at 9 p.m.

Ed Pease, assistant to the president for legal affairs at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, will speak about liability and risk management for student organizations.

“It’s important for all of us to understand how the legal system works and the duties it imposes on us so we can conform our conduct accordingly,” Pease said.

The lecture will focus on civil and criminal law and risk management, Pease said. He said he also will focus on the laws dealing with personal and group liability and how to avoid liability.

The speech is geared toward fraternities and sororities, but applies to student groups in general, he said.

“It specifically applies to them (fraternities) because they need to be aware of the duties imposed by the law so they can manage their risks better,” he said.

IFC President Rob Martin said the speech will give insight to preventing and reducing risks. “Knowing what the risks and liabilities in a chapter home are, can reduce those risks,” he said.

Pease said he will talk about negligence and parties, contracts, criminal law involving alcohol and criminal liability for hazing.
