Fighting Irish, Zips too much

A pair of road losses at Notre Dame and Miami (Ohio) closed the traveling portion of the NIU women’s tennis season on a low note.

NIU, 13-11 in dual match competition, began the weekend with a 9-0 loss at Notre Dame Friday afternoon. The Huskies, who didn’t play well on Friday, bounced back from lethargic play to strongly challenge Miami’s singles lineup, before succumbing to a 7-2 Saturday afternoon loss.

“Friday we just didn’t perform to our potential against Notre Dame,” NIU coach Patty Groth said. “Saturday we played excellent tennis and could have beaten Miami with a few breaks here and there.”

NIU managed no more than four points in any set against the Fighting Irish. Lisa Boedecker took Miami’s Laurie Vetter to tie-breaker points in both No. 5 singles sets before losing 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4). Hild Andersch and Jami Cheek got by Miami’s Meg Boyle and Stacey mack in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 for the No.1 doubles win.
