Student pleads guilty to drug charge

An NIU student arrested in February for allegedly selling controlled substances plead guilty Thursday and faces probation and fines.

Robert A. Shorty, 19, Peoria, is under a 12-month probation and will have to pay $450 in fines, DeKalb Circuit Clerk office officials said. Shorty waived his right to a jury trial.

Shorty was arrested Feb. 2 by the DeKalb County Narcotics Task Force and charged with possession with intent to deliver between 10 and 30 grams of marijauna.

Shorty was arrested in his residence hall room. His roommate, Terry Stephens, 18, also was arrested and faced similar charges. The pair were later banned from the residence halls.

The task force—comprised of the DeKalb, University, Genoa and Sycamore police departments, along with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office—acted on confidential tips to make the arrests.

Police also confiscated about $2,100 from the room.
