Peaceful demonstration to be held for legalizing marijuana
April 23, 1990
A DeKalb group in favor of legalizing marijuana is hosting a peaceful demonstration with pro_marijuana speakers and music today in the West Lagoon at 3 p.m.
“Hemp Tour ‘90” is an event attended by pro-marijauna activists and members from the National Organization for the Rescinding of Marijuana Laws (NORML) who travel the country to gain support for legalizing marijauna.
The event is typically marked by participants smoking marijuana.
Local organizer Jeff Ladin said he arranged the tour’s DeKalb stop after reading about it in the national magazine High Times.
Ladin said DeKalb was listed in High Times as a stop for the tour but when he contacted the magazine, he was told there was no one in charge of the stop yet.
High Times advocates legalizing marijuana. The NORML uses the magazine as a voice for its cause.
There will be scheduled speakers from the national organization and marijuana activist Bennett Masel also will speak at the event. Masel is the author of “The Emperor Wears No Clothes.”
Local DeKalb band Junebug Massacre also will be playing at the event.
DeKalb and University Police were unavailable for comment.
