Netters overcome tough conditions

NIU’s men’s tennis team overcame many obstacles to notch a successful weekend at Northern Iowa Univeristy.
The Huskies came away with a four-match win streak and a 15-11 record.
The cold and windy conditions forced play indoors. NIU faced Wisconsin-LaCrosse and netted a 9-0 win. On Saturday morning, NIU moved outdoors (32 degree temperature) and tackled Wisconsin-Stout with a 6-0 decision.
In the afternoon, the Huskies matched up with Northern Iowa, and claimed a 7-2 Association of Mid-Continent Universities win over the Panthers.
“We lost only two matches out of the 24 we played, and considering all the changes in schedule—court surfaces, conditions—that’s not bad. I think our win over Northern Iowa secures a No. 2 seed for us in the AMCU tourney,” Merzbacher said.
Merzbacher hopes the winning weekend gives the Huskies some added confidence and momentum going into a Tuesday 2 p.m. meeting with Illinois State University in Normal, Ill.
