Former Huskie grappler earns Hall recognition

Former NIU All-America wrestler Bill Young was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Hall of Fame at the annual IWCOA All-State Banquet April 8 in Hickory Hills.

Young, the long-time head wrestling coach at Naperville Central High School, lettered four seasons at NIU (1955-59) under Bob Kahler and Bob Brigham. The Thornton High School product placed at the NAIA Championships as a junior and as a senior.

In 1958, the Huskie 167-pound entry finished third at the NAIA meet. A year later, Young wound up fourth in the 157-pound bracket when NIU hosted the NAIA competition. Young captained NIU’s 11-0-0 dual-meet team as a sophomore in 1956-57.

A regular on Brigham’s 1957-58 Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team mat champions, Young had the distinction of placing in four consecutive IIAC tourneys. He finished runner-up at 167 three times and third at 177 (1958-59).
