Candidate proposes manual

Making NIU a safer campus through a manual detailing well-lighted paths and procedures to follow after an assault are plans by Student Association presidential candidate Robert McCormack.

SA Sen. McCormack said an “all-encompassing” campus saftey manual would contain procedures for victims of sexual and racial assault, phone numbers and important information on campus security.

“Safety is an important issue to me because all students should be assured a safe way to get across campus,” McCormack said. The manual might be developed and produced by the 1990 fall semester, he said.

Procedures for assault victims would be included in the manual to give students additional resources when assaulted, he said.

Phone numbers for Students Legal Services, the NIU Ombudsman’s Office, University Police and the Crisis Line would also be in the manual.

A campus map displaying all emergency call boxes and well-lighted routes to surrounding areas would be included in the manual. McCormack said those who need to walk across campus at night can look at the map and find which route would be best lit.

He said he wants to bring all of this information together in one manual so students have easy access to safety information.

“It will be a comfort for parents and students alike to know that each student has this information in case of an emergency,” McCormack said.

He said he is looking into a student-run escort service to “fill in the gaps” of the mass transit system and the late night ride service.

McCormack said he contacted the University of Michigan Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center for information on his plan. The U of M has successfully implemented an escort service.
