Laundry room fire at OCR
February 20, 1990
No one was injured Saturday night when a laundry dryer full of towels caught on fire at the Office of Campus Recreation Center.
Smoke from the blaze was confined to the center’s laundry room, which is used for washing center equipment such as towels and sleeping bags, OCR Director Betty Montgomery said.
“There was no smoke in the gym,” Montgomery said, adding that the building was not evacuated because officials did not find it necessary.
A full lint filter probably caused the fire, DeKalb Fire Department Chief Jeff Long said. Long said the towels apparently overheated and caught on fire.
“Once they (OCR officials) figured out what it was, and that it was confined, they probably felt no one was in danger and it wasn’t necessary to evacuate,” Long said.
The fire was put out by one of the center’s student employees, Montgomery said. However, the fire department brought fans to the scene to help clear out smoke.
Damage to the dryer and towels was $100, Long said.
Montgomery said there has been no incident similar to Saturday’s fire in the past. “I hope it never happens again,” she said.
