Impeachment notice delayed
February 2, 1990
Student Association senators were unable to give President Huda Scheidelman an impeachment notice Thursday.
SA senator Galvin Kennedy and newly-elected senator James Mertes started the petition on Jan. 28. Kennedy and Mertes collected seven signatures Thursday, including their own, and placed a note in Scheidelman’s SA mailbox asking her to meet with them at 6 p.m.
Scheidelman said she did not meet with Kennedy and Mertes because they did not make an appointment. “If I make an appointment I will keep it,” she said.
Kennedy and Mertes tried to give Scheidelman the notice because SA bylaws state the executive board member being removed must be notified in writing ten days before the senate meets.
“I’m really embarrassed for the senators (who signed the petition). I think it’s pretty ridiculous,” Scheidelman said.
SA Vice President Steve Coloia said Scheidelman knew she might receive an impeachment notice.
An SA member, who wanted to remain anonymous, said Scheidelman sent a memo to staff members telling them she was aware of the petition.
If Scheidelman receives the notice by Feb. 8, the issue will be addressed at the Feb. 18 senate meeting. Scheidelman then will be allowed to make a presentation and question the action taken against her. A two-thirds senate vote is needed to remove Scheidelman from office.
Posters calling for the impeachment of Scheidelman were posted around campus about two weeks ago. The students who signed the petition “had nothing to do with the signs,” Mertes said.
Kennedy and Mertes tried to contact each senator to inform them of the notice before attempting to give it to Scheidelman.
Scheidelman said there is no reason for her to avoid the situation because, “it will eventually come before the senate.”
She said she knows which senators began the petition and the reasons behind it, but refused to comment on them.
